History of Wassookeag Farm

Wassookeag Farm Circa 1940

The main house and barn were built in 1908.  There were previous structures on the property but they were totally destroyed in a fire around 1897.  In 1937 Horace and Isabelle Hopkins bought the farm and raise brooding chickens.  In a conversation with Isabelle she indicated that there were as many as 6,000 chickens on the farm.  A large chicken house was removed decades ago and about ten years ago a gambled roof garage was erected.  It currently houses a woodworking shop.

Tomato PlantsWassookeag Farm is currently operated as a “natural” farm with no use of non-organic fertilizers.  I am specializing in garlic, tomatoes, peas, pole beans, and sweet corn but try to raise a mixture of quality produce.  The property contained six rows of high bush blueberries and I have been adding to them each year.  The production of blueberries has increased each year and the crop looks very good for Blueberries- Wassookeag Farm2010 as the bushes mature.  Raspberries canes have steadily increased in quality ad quantity but it will be several years before they can catch up to the blueberJim Greehey- Wassookeag Farmries.  The apple orchard is slowly developing but should be producing the fall.

Wassookeag Farm is a one person operation but each year I feel the farm is improving in its production and appearance. Having an operating farm this close to Downtown Dexter Should be a continuing asset to the town. Many summer lake  residents pass by the farm on the way home from town and I have enjoyed providing them with what I can produce.
