La
Bergerie: French,
meaning the sheep farm!
Established 1994
La
Bergerie is home to 60
Oxford and Oxford/ Corridale
cross breeding ewes and 3 registered Oxford rams. These
sheep are well suited as meat animals as they are fast growers and
muscle up well. Most
lambs that you see
on the farm are white and naturally hornless. A few of our Corriadale
crosses do have black faces.
Lambing
season starts in February and continues until June or early
July. Up to 100 lambs are born each year with many twins, and the
occasional set of triplets. Lambs
are kept at
the farm until they
are between eight to twelve weeks of age at which time they are fully
weaned from their mothers. We feed quality hay and haylage raised and
harvested from our own fields. A balanced, pelleted sheep ration is
also fed.
Most lambs at La Bergerie
are bought by families
for meat
animals, sold to 4Hers for market lamb projects, or sent to auction
for Easter and Autumn sales. If
raising a lamb
at home isn't a possibility, we
are
more than happy to raise them for you. Average market weight for a meat
lamb is 100 pounds live weight. For current prices and weights please
contact us directly.
In order to keep our flock cool in the summer we shear everyone in the
spring. Raw wool is available by the pound for interested hand
spinners. Please contact us for more information.
Oxen: Steer that have
been trained
to work.
