About Us
Mark officially names the farm!
Sheriff
Wendy and Mark Sheriff
are the owners of Avalon Acres Orchard & Farm. Although Wendy and Mark m
et in
Connecticut and were married in Massachusetts, Maine has always been a
special place to them. Wendy's family, the Annis's, lived in
Maine for many generations dating back to the 1700s. Her father was
born in Rockland. The family frequently visited a summer home in
Thomaston and Wendy loved to listen to the many stories that were told
about Maine. She
always wanted to move to Maine. That dream was finally made possible by
a loving, hardworking husband, three great children, a supportive
family, and some really great friends that have helped them to
re-establish their Maine roots.
Wendy and Mark,
along with their children, Brandon, Matthew, and
Caitlyn, now call Avalon Acres their home. The name Avalon was chosen
for their farm as it's meaning is "Isle of Apples". This is an actual
place in Glastonbury, England and it is reported that
King Arthur was taken to there when he was mortally wounded and is
supposedly buried there.
When the orchard was
purchased it had 250 existing trees. Since then, over 60 more have been
planted. In an effort to learn the best management
practices regarding their
orchard they went to "Apple School" taught by
Dave Olmsted from Olmsted's Orchard
in Charleston, Maine. Dave and Pat have been an enormous help and very
supportive- THANK YOU!
So our history here in Maine is still young, but we have a lot of plans
for the future. Our family roots are now back in Maine. Stop by and
watch us grow!
